Cheaper EV Charging? It’s Possible with Solar
In 1969, when the Beatles first sang ‘Here Comes the Sun’, they couldn’t have predicted all the benefits of solar energy.
In 2023, a growing number of Queenslanders are taking advantage of living in the Sunshine State and fighting back against the cost of living by charging their EVs for a lower cost through solar.
How to use solar energy to charge an electric vehicle
One of the many great features of driving an EV is the convenience of charging at home. After all, nobody enjoys that frantic trip to the nearest service station when you need fuel.
Did you know that if your home has a solar panel and battery system, you could be charging an EV for less money? Just as solar energy can be used to power your household appliances, an EV can be charged through either a wall socket or home charging device.
The ideal time to charge an EV using solar would be 10am-2pm, when the sun is shining brightest, and your home is generating excess solar energy.
This will depend on the set up of your home solar and battery, and the charging capacity of your EV. You will also have to be mindful that solar may not be enough to fully charge the EVs with above average range, such as the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y. Rather, solar could be used for “top up” charging in conjunction with using electricity from the grid and public charging.
Benefits of solar charging EVs
By using solar energy to charge your EV, your vehicle becomes even better for the environment. Pure electric vehicles emit little to no carbon emissions; the only emissions associated with these types of cars come from the carbon-powered electricity from the grid. Even just using a little bit of solar power, which is a renewable and clean form of energy, reduces the environmental impact of your driving.
Doesn’t it feel good to do something for the environment that may also benefits you? Solar charging means you generate your own energy from the sun, and therefore you could be charging some of your EV for less cost. With rising electricity costs, solar charging is a great option for Aussie households with an EV.
